The LORD God gave Solomon wisdom to govern and many other blessings that Solomon did not ask for. Yet, as we will read, Solomon’s life was a divided one. His wisdom was so renowned that influential men and women from all over the world came to Israel to hear him. But for all this wisdom the author of Kings reveals that Solomon did not follow the law of God. Even a quick sample of Deuteronomy 17 shows this criticism of his reign, “But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the LORD has said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’ Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself” (DEUTERONOMY 17:16-17). Great wisdom does not equal great obedience. Near the end of his reign, we see that the division in Solomon’s heart had spread to his kingdom, cracks appeared that would completely split Israel after his death.
