Things are very different in heaven than they are on earth. God’s works and ways are much better than our own. As humans, we lean toward pride and arrogance. We can feel entitled to things rather quickly. We see that reflected in the parable of the laborers in the vineyard that Jesus tells in our reading today. Though the workers hired at the beginning of the day agreed
to a fair payment, they were enraged when others who had worked less time were given the same amount. We would also likely yell, “Unfair!” at an employer if they did that to us. But who are we to be angry at God’s generosity? Heaven and earth operate differently. In heaven, our value is not decided by how productive we are, how hard or how long we work. We have value because we have been redeemed by Christ! Jesus told His disciples, “So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen” (MATTHEW 20:16).
