"Saul had made his mark as Israel’s first king. But something wasn’t right about him. Saul would ignore the commands of God and do things that seemed to be right and take the glory for victory. King Saul spent the last part of his reign chasing after God’s next chosen king, David. The desire to be king above all became a snare to him. He was self-absorbed and thinking only about himself. Sometimes, selfishness reveals itself in strange ways. In 1 Samuel 14, we see Saul’s son Jonathan gather his courage and begin a battle against the Philistines. Jonathan’s battle was a great success and yielded twenty men that day. But Saul had spoken rashly and pronounced a curse upon anyone who would eat that day until he avenged his enemies. Jonathan just so happened to eat honey without knowing about the curse. In his father’s eyes, he was as good as dead! But the people came to his defense, so that Jonathan did not die. Time after time we see the mix-up in King Saul’s mind between God’s will and his will because he was so self-absorbed.
