"As it is today, there were many religions in the time of Saul the first King of Israel. One of those religions was the worship of Dagon by the Philistines. Though this god shows up in our reading today, this is not the first time he has shown up in Scripture. Remember how the judge Samson tore down a temple to Dagon in Judges 16, and then later how the Ark of the Covenant was captured and kept in a temple of Dagon in 1 Samuel 5. This was not Israel’s first encounter with Dagon, but it would have seemed a temporary victory for the pagan god. Historians have noted that Dagon has associations with water and grain, his name in Hebrew has even prompted some to visualize him as a fish god. Others note that ancient Ugarit saw Dagon as the father of Baal, another pagan god that routinely shows up in the Bible. In our reading, we will see that the death of Saul gives the Philistines a reason to worship Dagon with the body of their defeated enemy. Luckily, this isn’t the end of the story.
