"Haggai lived in the time after the Babylonian exile. It was a time in which the people of God had forgotten their priorities. They had returned to Jerusalem from exile under the direction of the Persian King Cyrus. Their assignment was to refurbish the city, rebuild the Temple, and make it the place of worship before the LORD once again. Instead, the people became discouraged and had abandoned their Temple project. Haggai gains insight from the LORD to explain why they were struggling to maintain a comfortable living in the land. The LORD was not blessing the work of the people because they were only focused on their own success.
Haggai’s challenge was to encourage and motivate the people living in Jerusalem to get their minds off of their own comforts and honour God by rebuilding His Temple first. Question is would they take the easy way out, or follow God’s ways? The message of Haggai would later echo through the words of Jesus to His disciples, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (MATTHEW 6:33).
