"The Church has marked many places in Scripture, such as Matthew 18, for how to handle heated disagreements or confrontations among brothers and sisters in Christ. But what happens when we go too far? There is no perfect answer for how to handle a conflict in the Church without the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God, which can gain the heart of those who are in serious disagreement with each other. Paul has to deal with this when writing to the church at Thessalonica. Paul speaks as the Holy Spirit directed him, but do we pay attention to what he said? When we read the Scriptures with an open heart to God’s Holy Spirit, and do not let our own ideas interfere, the passages begin to teach and help us resolve our conflicts, and things begin to change.
