He was one hundred and twenty years old, and it seemed like he would survive forever! But the great leader Moses was now about to die. Most of the older generation had died off in the wilderness wandering. Deuteronomy is the account of Israel’s covenant with God renewed—words written to this next generation heading into the Promised Land. They would do what their fathers and mothers were supposed to do. Out with the old, in with the new. The Hebrew title of the book is Haddebarim translating in English to “these are the words.” Moses reiterated everything that
he told the people some thirty-eight years earlier. Deuteronomy is a book of instructions given to Israel as a whole, not just the priests. It is in this book that the Shema is brought forth as the heart of the Law (DEUTERONOMY 6:4-9). It is in this book that Moses warns the people about those who appear to be people who speak for God but are wolves luring prey into apostasy. It is a wonderful book about the Laws of God and the work of the LORD.
