Israel was a new nation. It started out as a family of about seventy people who went to Egypt during a famine. God had made a way for them to survive (GENESIS 45-50), and now they had expanded to a nation of several million people (CF. E XODUS 12:37). This nation did not start with a place, but with God. And it would be God who would give them a place. Today, that place is still being fought over thousands of years after God’s promise to Abraham. Israel is the only nation in the world we are instructed in the Bible to pray for. Israel is the only nation to have been named by God five hundred years before it was in place. This new nation did not have its origins in a place, but in God. And the LORD God gave them a small piece of land in the Middle East. However, before all of this happened, God gave them a specific command. There was one way they could keep the identity God had given them before they established their land: the Shema. As Christians, we recognize this as the Greatest Commandment––no one can truly follow the Shema today unless they follow God’s Son.
