The Book of James; James 1-3

The New Testament letter of James is amazing. In it, he famously wrote that faith without works is dead (JAMES 2:20,26). The James of this letter was one of the half-brothers of Jesus, a son of Mary and Joseph (MATTHEW 13:55). It’s believed that James wrote this letter sometime between AD 45-48, sometime after the persecution of Herod Agrippa but before the council in Jerusalem recorded in Acts 15. That would make the book of James one of the earliest written books of the New Testament. James, the man, became a powerful leader in the Jerusalem church. We see him speak in Acts 15, when the church was struggling with the idea of Gentiles coming to God through Christ. Because James was written before Acts 15, and because James was writing to other Christ following Jews, it has a deep Jewish flavor to it. It is commanding and hard, yet true and alive with good, godly counsel for us today.
