"1 Kings 11:3 gives us important information about King Solomon: And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.‚ With all of Solomon's vast wisdom, his whole life seems to be in direct contradiction to Deuteronomy 17:16-20, God's governing principles for kings. In fact, it's prophetic. If only Solomon was not focused on material prosperity, he could focus on supporting the spiritual prosperity of his people. Ironically, in Solomon's pursuit of prosperity, his kingdom gives way after his death. By neglecting God, he neglected his kingdom. Because he forgot: it was never his kingdom in the first place. During this time, Israel's enemies surface again, undoing the work of his father David. 1 Kings 11:6 says, Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David.‚ Solomon failed to keep the covenant of God for himself and the people of Israel.
