The city of Jerusalem has a rich and holy history. It flourished during the time of David and the economy boomed under Solomon's wisdom. Long before that, in the time of Abraham, it was known as Salem, meaning peace‚. In fact, Jewish tradition suggests that Shem, the son of Noah, was an early king who founded the city after the global flood subsided. Jerusalem has deep spiritual roots. And when Nehemiah supervised rebuilding the walls of the city in the 460s BC, it seems like he was touched or moved by the Holy Spirit to help restore and oversee operation of the once holy city. The people who live within a city are responsible for its operation and longevity, even contributing to its personality, so to speak. Nehemiah carefully records the actions of gathering people to begin the challenge of re-establishing and maintaining Jerusalem.
