Before Caesarea was built by Herod to secure his position with Rome, it was a place named Straton's (Strato's) Tower. It was a seaport founded in the 4th century BC by a Sidonian king named Abdashtart. In 96 BC, it was brought under Jewish control by the Hasmonean ruler Alexander Jannaeus. In 63 BC, Roman general Pompey returned it to Gentile rule even though its Jewish community continued to grow. Next in its Roman history, Straton's Tower was given to Cleopatra by Mark Antony for a time before it was handed over to Herod in 30 BC, by the victorious octavian. Herod is the one who extensively rebuilt the city and transformed it into Caesarea or Caesar by the sea‚. Here, Herod built an impressive palace, and here, Paul the apostle presents his case near the end of the book of Acts.
