The prophet begins to speak to Israel about the future. The next few chapters of Zechariah are a fascinating display of what God will do. Some of it has already happened, while other sections remain to be fulfilled. Zechariah, the person, was a contemporary of Haggai and is mentioned in Nehemiah 12:4,16 and Ezra 5:1; 6:14 as one of the leaders who returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile. He came from a priestly family, so it's important to note that he was a former exile with a priestly background, turned prophet. Zechariah began his ministry in october-November of 520 BC. At first, his focus was on the re-building of the Temple of God, but as we move through his book, he begins to focus on the future Messiah. Zechariah 9-14 is some of the greatest prophecies of the old Testament, from the visions of this exile-turned-Jerusalem-citizen, and called prophet of God.
