Samuel was distressed when the elders of Israel insisted that he appoint a king, rather than another judge, to rule over them like the other nations had. Deeply offended with their demand, Samuel brought it to the LORD in prayer. God consoled Samuel and assured him that the people were not rejecting him but God Himself as their King. The LORD also told Samuel to warn the people about the high cost that would come to them with a kingship. They
heard the words, but they wanted a king and would take whatever would come. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul must realize that his power and purpose was in God’s anointing—that Israel was God’s people and not his. And the instructions that Samuel was giving him about the destruction of the Amalekites were divine and needed to be followed exactly. But Saul chose not to follow God’s commands fully and even tried to make excuses for his disobedience. Saul’s empty regret and half-hearted repentance that came too late, not only brought an end to Samuel’s endorsement of him as king, but God took the kingship of Israel away from him.
