There are a total of 21 verses in the English rendering of the Biblical book of obadiah. The name obadiah means Servant of Yahweh‚. While we have very little information about the man who wrote obadiah, it seems that the best historical fit for his vision is sometime after the fall of Jerusalem, though some prefer to place him much earlier in the 9th century BC. With its 21 verses, obadiah is the shortest book in the old Testament, yet it still packs a punch. In this direct and pointed book, God's judgments against the nation of Edom are described. It was Isaac's son and Jacob's twin brother, Esau, who founded the nation of Edom. In the Bible, Edom is sometimes called Mt. Seir and other times referenced as the Mountains of Esau.‚ obadiah uses imagery to tell us of Edom's great success and even greater coming disaster: Though they are set among the stars, God will bring them down.
