Acting on a misunderstanding can have very bad consequences. This is as true today as it always has been. At the level of ancient politics, though, the consequences were often deadly. This was the case in our reading today when King David found himself in a difficult place. He had sent a group of officials to the nation of Ammon after their king had died. David wanted to
extend real sorrow and condolences as well as to reaffirm the treaty of peace he had with their old king. The new king of Ammon, however, was suspicious and he took this envoy the wrong way. Thinking the men were spies with evil intentions, the king captured them, humiliated them, and sent them home as a message. This misunderstanding had brutal consequences with many men losing their lives.
