The effects of light are palpable: even the tiniest bit of light can make a room or area crossable. Where there is no light, however, there is danger, the unknown, and fear. Jesus said that He was the light of the world, that everyone who believes in Him and follows Him would not walk in darkness but have the light of life (JoHN 8:12). We can know the truth, know what to do and when to do it, by the grace of God. In our reading today, the rulers and Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by
bringing Him a woman caught in the act of adultery. This must have been humiliating for the woman as they dragged her front and center. Claiming the woman's guilt, they reminded Jesus of the Law of Moses: that one who commits adultery should be stoned, and asked what He would do. Instead of responding, Jesus stooped down and began to write in the sand. We don't know what He
was writing but as they persisted, Jesus stood up and said, He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first‚ (JoHN 8:7). The accusers became convicted in their hearts and began to leave one by one. When they had all left, Jesus said to the woman go and sin no more.‚
