The history of King Josiah, the sixteenth king of Judah, is a high point in the declining southern kingdom. Josiah was only eight years old when he became king. His father Amon had died, and he had led Judah in idol worship and pagan practices. After over half a century of this rebellion
against God in Judah, you would think that it would continue. After all, what chance would an eight-year-old king have to escape a culture of evil? But the love of God must have grown in Josiah's heart because we're told that he began to seek God when he was sixteen years old. This led to dramatic reforms. Josiah destroyed idolatrous high places in Judah and in Israel which was outside of his political territory. He broke idols and desecrated cult centers so that they could no longer be used. Considering all this dramatic activity, it is interesting to me that Josiah hadn't read the Book of the Law yet. It was found after his reforms when he had begun
to repair and restore the Jerusalem Temple.
