Exactly fourteen months after Ezekiel’s first vision he receives news from God about the judgment of Jerusalem, historians believe the date was September 17, 592 BC. In Ezekiel 8 we see the reasons for this judgment spelled out explicitly; there were religious abominations going on in the Temple. Though Ezekiel was given a front row seat to all of this, the severity
of the judgment still causes him to cry out. In Ezekiel 9:8, he says, “Ah, Lord GOD! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?” In his vision, Ezekiel had seen men with weapons in their hands told to go through the city and slaughter all who did not have the mark of God on them. These men should be interpreted as representations of God’s judgment; perhaps angels in the spiritual world, but their actions would be completed by Babylonians in the physical world. God’s judgment was profound and deep. We can see here an image of God conquering sin, and it isn’t pretty. This is the kind of judgment that Jesus came to save us from.
