"God expected the Israelites to take their covenants seriously. He expected them to be like Him. The book of Joshua tells us that the Israelites were tricked into making a covenant with the Gibeonites, and that Joshua upheld the covenant anyway. The Israelites had taken an oath to protect Gibeon as their own, and they honoured that oath. When
Saul was king, he ignored this covenant and killed many of them. The Gibeonites were too weak to defend themselves or to secure justice, but God saw the injustice and did something about it. He had thrust the land into a famine; the Israelite people were guilty so the land would not produce for them. After Saul's death the famine continues, which prompts David to ask God for clarity. God told David about the injustice perpetrated by the king, about the bloodguilt remaining in the land. God knows the hearts of men, God sees the actions of us all, and His memory is perfect. God will always bring justice.
