In the first few chapters of Exodus, we see the times change for the nation of Israel. Israel had come into Egypt as a family of about seventy people, but we are told their numbers grew very quickly. A more concerning change was that since the time of Joseph, the Egyptian Pharaoh had changed. This new Pharaoh did not have an understanding of who the Israelites were, who Joseph was or how or why Israel had come into the land. He saw Israel as a threat and began to persecute them. Exodus 1 sets up these changing conditions within ancient Egypt. Chapter 2 gives us the beginnings of Moses’ story. He was born to a cursed generation of Israelite boys: Pharaoh had ordered all male babies born to the Israelites be killed. Against all odds, God made a way for Moses to live. Chapter 3 continues Moses’ story. He is grown and is forced to run from Egypt, intending never to return, until God appears to him. There is a lot going on in this story and it is fascinating! These chapters cover more than eighty years of really interesting time.
