The family of Jacob that went into Egypt had emerged a nation. God was taking a census of Israel so that they would truly see this, and in doing so was also teaching them how to act and react to Him. God wanted them to put Him first in their culture. As with any great change, there were times of rebellion and kickback by the people. One of these rebellions was against Moses. Even though God clearly spoke to Moses, some of the people were dissatisfied with the results. After all, they complained, the whole nation was holy, so they should have equal job opportunities to lead. They failed to acknowledge that it was God appointing Israel’s leadership, not Moses himself. We must learn from these ancient lessons; it is wise to obey the LORD because He is never wrong.
