Elihu speaks in today’s reading, he speaks last because he was the youngest of the men and it was a show of respect for his elders. Yet, his words show an arrogance toward them. Elihu respected them in practice but not in truth. The Bible identifies Elihu as the son of Barakel the Buzite, he may have been a descendant of Abraham’s nephew Buz (GENESIS 22:20-21). I find it interesting that Job’s three older friends never mention Job’s name when confronting him, but Elihu addresses him by name several times. Also, something to note is that Elihu begged to be heard, which is what Job had wanted from his friends from the beginning. Elihu’s many words are fascinating. As we listen to him, we’ll hear his arrogance rise in the midst of Job’s devastation.
