In the Biblical books of Chronicles, there are records of good and bad kings, and we get to see how God interacts with both. Today, we will read about one of the good kings of the southern kingdom of Judah, Asa, father of Jehoshaphat and son of Abijah. But before we do, Asa’s father deserves a mention. Abijah was a good king who frequently depended and called
upon the LORD. Here is an example from 2 Chronicles 13, when Israel attacked Judah, “Thus the children of Israel were subdued at that time; and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD God of their fathers” (2 CHRONICLES 13:18). This sets us up for Asa’s reign; the Bible tells us that Asa also did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD. He removed the places of false worship that were being used around Judah, and he brought peace to the land. This does not mean that Asa had no enemies, but that he depended on God and God helped him.
