In today’s reading, Moses spoke to Pharaoh about the plague of frogs that would infest the land of Egypt. When they did, Pharaoh’s magicians pulled off a similar trick. This seems to have served to minimize the power of God in their minds, but there was so much more to come. Exodus 8 records all the details of the plague of frogs, then lice and flies. Chapter 9 continues the plagues, opening with the plague of sick livestock. Chapter 10 handles the eighth plague of locusts and the ninth plague which was darkness. There is only one plague left for us to read about: the death of the firstborn, but before we do, let’s focus in on the plague of frogs. It is very interesting when we
consider that Egyptian culture had frog deities. The frog goddess could be depicted in the form of a frog, as a frog-headed woman, or as a woman-headed frog. She is believed to have personified regeneration, rebirth, and fertility. God was communicating His power over all things not only to
Pharaoh, but anyone in Egypt who would listen.
