Today we begin our reading of the third gospel: Luke. Though Luke is one of the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, it still reads quite differently in its style from the other two. Luke adds in more historical annotations than the other gospels, and he includes his reason for writing the gospel and his methodology of research and writing in the first few verses. The Greek name “Luke” appears three other times in the New Testament: Colossians 4:14,
2 Timothy 4:11, and Philemon 24. In the Colossians passage he is called the beloved physician, and the other passages let us know that he travelled with Paul on some of his missionary journeys. Luke also authored the book of Acts. It was important to him that everyone who read his works would understand the ancestry, birth, and early life of Jesus, Jesus’ ministry, and then the early life of the Church.
