The land of Gaza is mentioned in the Bible many times. Historically, it belonged to the Philistines, a Canaanite culture who fought against the nation of Israel. While King David was able to diminish their presence and power in the region, much later Jeremiah would still prophesy against
the Philistines. The first seven verses of Jeremiah 47 were written around 604 BC, during the reign of King Jehoahaz. “Baldness has come upon Gaza, Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley. How long will you cut yourself?” (JEREMIAH 47:5). A big issue with the Philistines was apparently how they handled it when Israel and Judah were under punishment from God. Rather than seeing it as a serious thing, they ridiculed God’s people and took advantage of their difficulties. Here’s the point: God judges our hearts and intentions. When we see people
in judgment, let’s not rejoice over it ( P R OV. 2 4 : 1 7 - 1 8 ). Let’s allow God to remain the judge and remember that we too are sinful humans that will face His righteous judgment.
