The laws of God, while ancient in origin, are not outdated, irrelevant, or non-applicable in today’s world. They were instructions given so that the people of Israel could, first of all, love and serve God and then love and take care of each other. This was unique in their time, as it is in ours. Humans, by nature, are selfish. However, when we encounter the presence of Jesus Christ and acknowledge Him as our Saviour to follow Him as LORD of our lives, we are literally a new creation! We begin the journey of transformation in our lives. This transformation does not come from our own self-discipline, but through the gift of God’s Holy Spirit inside of us. This happens to those who are “born again”, as Jesus would explain to Nicodemus in John chapter 3. Like the cities of refuge, it creates a culture not based on revenge but on restitution and justice.
