The Law was created by God to show the sinfulness of man in contrast to the holiness of God. This would shape the culture of Israel in a unique way. On this side of the cross, the Mosaic Law is usually broken into three parts: ceremonial, civil, and moral. The ceremonial law pertained to worship practices, festivals, rituals, and sacrifices, which foreshadowed Christ and were fulfilled by Him (EPH. 2:14-16). The civil law covered the governmental, judicial, societal, and cultural rules of the nation of Israel and were annulled by God when He established a new covenant through Christ (HEB. 8:6-7,1 3 ) . While the civil laws are no longer applicable for Christians today, the
underlying principles of justice and equity remain relevant and important practice. The moral law consists of universal and timeless principles still applicable today, such as the Shema, which Christ said was necessary for eternal life: Love God and love neighbour (DEUT. 6 : 4 - 9, LEV. 1 9 : 1 8 ; LUKE 10:25-27; ROM. 13:8-10)––the moral law reflects God's unchanging nature and will.
