Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, and we really don’t know much about the prophet Obadiah other than his name means “worshipper (or servant) of Yahweh.” His book focuses exclusively on the ancient nation of Edom. According to Obadiah, their judgment was on its way, and Israel would possess their land. The tensions between Israel and Edom go back to the very beginning of the people groups to their forefathers Jacob and Esau. Their
history is recorded in Genesis. They were the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. We’re told they wrestled inside and outside of the womb. Jacob was the younger twin but managed to cheat Esau of the birthright of the firstborn son. In their lifetimes, the brothers ended up reconciling, but their difficult relationship was a foreshadowing of the nations that would be formed from their descendants. Obadiah prophesied against Edom because of their evil dealings with Israel. Obadiah’s prophecies are only 18 verses long, but they hit hard.
