How is it possible to pursue life, liberty, and happiness without God? While there are some who would answer that question by saying ‘we are happily living without Him’, the question is: Is our happiness eternal? Does the pursuit of happiness end when we die? Or worse yet: Does it end when we’re sad or mad, or when things are not quite going our way? In other words, when our happiness is reduced to our feelings alone, we isolate ourselves from true happiness. We hide from the sun’s light and the water that feeds our soul: God working through His people. Joy cannot grow in darkness; it withers and dies as time moves along. We all need God to truly be happy––that eternal joy comes when the Holy Spirit indwells our heart. King Solomon highlights this all-too human problem in his book titled Ecclesiastes, or “Qoheleth” in Hebrew,
which translates to “preacher,” “teacher,” or “assembler”. Ecclesiastes seems like it was written for our time, addressing the practical and philosophical issues of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without God.
