Israel is Born; Genesis 30-32

Four women bore Jacob's children. His first wife, Leah, was given to him in marriage deceitfully. She entered the marriage with her maidservant, Zilpah, whom she would later use as a surrogate despite carrying her own children. Jacob then married Leah’s sister, Rachel, who he had originally intended to marry. Rachel would also use her maidservant, Bilhah, as a surrogate. These women would be the mothers of the tribes of Israel. To have children in Jacob’s time was considered a blessing of God, and this family history displays a major downfall of polygamy: competition and familial division. Even though the women’s purpose for family building was tainted in their struggle to be the most loved, God still graciously expanded Jacob’s family whom He would bless for the world’s sake. The first four children of Jacob are from Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. Dan and Naphtali came from Rachel’s maid Bilhah; Gad and Asher from Zilpah, Leah’s maid. Issachar and Zebulun followed, from Leah. Finally, Rachel was able to conceive and she bore Joseph, then Benjamin.
