Since his anointing as king, David had been called by God to defeat the Philistines. But he never accomplished that task until all his other enemies were removed. David had many enemies in his own nation and government. Today we learn why the LORD took time to defeat the enemies of David the way He did. 1 Kings 14 is a careful record of David’s kingdom becoming God’s Kingdom. David knew that the LORD had finished what needed to be done so David could fulfill his task and call, which God had commissioned him for. David is confirmed as the king by the Heavenly realm, which is critical to His future, and established by the earthly activities from the most successful city in the ancient Near East at that time. The Davidic kingdom, though deeply flawed, shows us a glimpse of the heavenly Kingdom to come.
