The principle of cause and effect is important for us to remember. Every action that we take has a consequence. For ancient Israel, they had attempted to alter the unalterable terms of their agreement with God, and the result was that they became callous to God and His ways. Amos called this out in his prophecies against Israel. He told them that though their lives seemed good, though their country was at peace, their hearts and spiritual condition was impoverished. To follow the law of God we have to realize that God sees who we really are, He sees through our actions to the intentions of our hearts. As Christians we know that God is always with us and is responsive to us. When we give our lives to Him, we begin to war effectively against our own evil and sin.
