The word Bible means book. This particular Book consists of sixty-six smaller books covering history, prophecy, inspiration, wisdom and, believe it or not, vanity!
Vanity is defined in English as excessive pride in one’s appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements. In Hebrew, the word for vanity is “hebel” meaning vapour, breath, nothingness. According to the NAS Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon, this word appears 30 times in the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes discusses issues that are both fascinating
and compelling. We begin to understand what the author meant when he claimed, “‘Vanity of vanities,’ says the Preacher; ‘Vanity of vanities, all is vanity’” – ECCLESIASTES 1:2. He means that life without God’s influence is only temporary, and set against eternity, and therefore has no real value.
