Genesis chapters 17-19 are very eventful! God secures His covenant with Abram and renames him Abraham, meaning father of a multitude (GENESIS 17:5). In chapter 18, Abraham is invited into a discussion with God about the future of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham intercedes for Sodom, asking God to spare the city if even ten righteous people could be found among the wicked. Unfortunately, Abraham should have gone further, because not even ten righteous could be found; only Lot and his family were righteous before God. In chapter 19, we are taken into the city of Sodom where Lot encounters two angels who have arrived in the city. The angels wanted to spend the night in the city square, but Lot would not let them. He was trying to hide
the city’s unyielding evil. The destruction of the city would begin that very night when the men of Sodom surround Lot’s house wanting the men who were staying with him. Evil will not always remain hidden, it will surface time and again.
