How do you show respect for the light when you are under the power of darkness? How can you find hope when you are surrounded by death and destruction? These two questions are answered over and again in the book of Daniel. This book begins with the harsh truth of the beginning of Judah’s fall to Babylon. First, Judah lost its independence as a nation, next she would be destroyed all together. Daniel was taken to Babylon in the first wave of Judah’s exile: Judah was still a nation, but it now served Babylon, just as Daniel and his companions would be expected to. Have you ever been in a situation that set you up to lose? Daniel must have felt like this. How could he stay faithful to the LORD while in the service of a pagan king? Though God was punishing Judah for their unfaithfulness, Daniel was among a group of young, exiled men who decided to show loyalty to God, first. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah loved God and were determined to remain faithful to Him. This came at a cost and would often be tested by the course of their new lives.
