Looks can be deceiving. During the life of the prophet Hosea, the northern nation of Israel was both prosperous and strong. As far as she was concerned, and as far as the physical evidence went, Israel was blessed by God. Except, their material blessing was not based on their righteousness. When we read the prophet Hosea’s words, we realize how deep the problem of sin went in Israel. She had broken the covenant that the nation had made with God. Israel was practicing idolatry, in fact, it was at the very heart of their national religion: Idolatry in the name of God! This false worship led to Hosea being called as a prophet to challenge and chide them. This leaves for all of us a powerful lesson. God does not let our false worship practices go unanswered. Material blessing does not necessarily mean God’s blessing. God has provided the work of Jesus Christ for us today, we can repent, be forgiven and heal.
