The question is why? Why would God allow or make someone suffer who has done nothing wrong? The book of Job is a wonderful study on how God’s will actually works, and on how we think. Often our personal pain drives our thoughts about God. When we feel good, God is good! When we suffer, we call into question God’s goodness. The book of Job reminds us that our natural way of thinking is confined to the here and now, it’s earthly. But when we’re dealing with God, He is outside of time; His plan for us is an eternal one. This problem of pain and the goodness of God is obviously an ancient one, in fact, Job is probably the oldest written book in the Bible, and yet its themes are just as relevant to us today. Historically, Job seems to be set in the time of the patriarchs, and its traditional author is Moses. As we begin to read, our earthly perspective is immediately corrected because the book begins with a debate in heaven.
