Though genealogies and lists aren’t very exciting on the surface, it is critical that God has recorded the history of the kings and their sons. These lists establish Jesus Christ as the fulfilment of the Davidic covenant. Jesus came to earth to confront, overcome, and conquer sin and its effects on humanity. Part of His legitimacy comes from His genealogical connection to Israel through His mother Mary. This is very important for the people of Israel to see. Jesus Christ was not some sort of founder of a mistaken Judaic sect; He was the promised Jewish Messiah who would open God’s family to the Gentiles. When Christ returns to earth, the Bible tells us that the Jews will see Him descending. “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD” ( PSALM 118:26). As we read through the list of the kings and their sons in 1 Chronicles 3, let’s recognize that God is placing His plan of salvation in historical context.
