1 Thessalonians was written as a letter to the church at Thessalonica, early on in Paul’s ministry. It’s believed to have been written not long after Timothy joined Paul’s mission, and it seems to be aimed at answering questions that the Thessalonians may have about God and the gospel of Christ. Back in Acts 17, we saw Paul, Silas, and Timothy evangelizing in Thessalonica for a short time. Thessalonica was the largest city in the important Roman province of Macedonia. Paul, Silas, and Timothy faced strong opposition there from Jewish leaders and city officials alike. So
much so that they had to leave more quickly than was normal. Even though they were able to establish a church, it makes a lot of sense that Paul would send back a letter aimed at answering questions and providing encouragement.
