There has been a lot of confusion over how we should define faith. Today, you’ll find that it means different things to different people. The modern dictionary catches part of its Biblical meaning as it defines faith as a confidence or trust in a person or thing. In Greek, which is the language the New Testament was originally written in, faith is generally defined as a conviction of truth, belief, respecting man’s relationship with God. We also get a famous quotation of Biblical faith in the New Testament book of Hebrews. The Scriptures say, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (HEBREWS 1 1 : 1 ). In Romans, we see Paul trying to clear up confusion around Biblical faith. There was great tension between Jew and Gentile in Rome, even when both were converted to Christianity. Within Judaism and Jewish Christianity, there seems to have been a push towards external works of God’s law and expressions of faith. So, in Romans, we see Paul tackling and explaining these issues.
