"The name Hosea means ‘salvation’ and his ministry began while Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II was king of Israel. His prophetic career covered the reigns of the Judean kings Jotham and Ahaz, and ended during Hezekiah’s reign. Hosea’s ministry and his book,
is about God’s love for sinners. This was a time when many in Judah were leaving their walk with God. Most had forgotten the commandments of Moses and were worshipping other gods. Personally, Hosea learned that God sometimes required His prophets to perform difficult and humbling object lessons. For Hosea, this object lesson was his life. God told
Hosea to get married, and He let Hosea know that his wife would be unfaithful to him. It's hard to imagine God asking a prophet to tolerate this violation of moral integrity, yet God would use the broken marriage vows in Hosea’s life to illustrate Israel’s unfaithfulness in their covenant with Him. Hosea’s message was to condemn sin, to warn of God’s impending judgment, and to assure those faithful to God that His love wins out in the end.
