"In a military setting, you are expected to follow a direct command until you accomplish it or
are defeated. In some cases, this means until you are victorious or your life is taken. Soldiers
are expected to do what the military leadership says, no matter what. In many ways, this gives
a soldier a purpose and a firm social structure. In times of war, rather than needing to search
for meaning, there is a clear purpose to the one who enlists. You adopt a meaning for your life
that goes beyond your personal understanding. This is one of the reasons many military men
and women struggle when they return home. They need a new purpose and role within society.
In our reading, Israel is in a time of warfare. God has commanded His people go in and take
the land they were given. Ai was the second city that the Israelites needed to conquer. They did
not do well at first because one of them had strayed from the commands of God, making them
weak. Once their failure was corrected, they could march back into battle with confidence.
